About

Why konnos exists.

Modern code hosting consolidated into a handful of US-based platforms whose terms of service grant them broad rights to use the code stored on them. For most teams that’s a quiet compromise — convenience in exchange for a thin slice of agency. For some teams it isn’t.

konnos is for the second group. A forge you self-host on hardware you control, in a jurisdiction you choose, licensed under GPL v3+. Data sovereignty is the entire point. GDPR is native, not a checkbox. There is no telemetry, no model training on private repos, no automatic upselling.

The project is community-governed. Today that means BDFL (flndrn); the moment five contributors have each merged three PRs over a six-month window, governance transitions to an elected maintainer council. The threshold is intentionally low because the project is intentionally small for now.

konnos is rooted in the EU. The maintainer is in Belgium. The instance at code.konnos.org runs on EU infrastructure. The naming is from Konnos Bay in Cyprus — a quiet eastern-Mediterranean cove that the founder visits. The brand is a hot-rose heart with white circuit traces inside; one lobe descends into roots, the other branches into a pipeline. Code that grounds itself, code that flows.

If any of that resonates, join the community or read the source.
